Hans Wegner was a Danish designer and architect, born in 1914. He became an architect in 1938 after completing his studies and began his career as a cabinetmaker.
He soon met designers Arne Jacobsen and Erik Mollet, with whom he collaborated extensively. They even appointed him project leader for the creation of all the furniture for the Nyborg Library.
Wegner began working for the Fritz Hansen brand. In 1943, he founded his own design studio, and in 1949, he began his partnership with Carl Hansen & Son, during which he created pieces now considered iconic.
His work demonstrates mastery of craftsmanship. His best-known creations include the Shell, Elbow, Wingchair, Round Chair, Papa Bear chair, and the CH339 Elliptical table.
He also collaborated with Fredericia, notably designing the J16 rocking chair as part of a program to popularize Modernist simplicity led by Børge Mogensen.
The American magazine Interiors featured Wegner’s chair “The Chair” on its cover, calling it “the most beautiful chair in the world.”

In 1960, Kennedy chose the Round Chair for his presidential debate, cementing Wegner’s place in the international design world.
Hans Wegner had a profound impact on Scandinavian design. He is primarily known for his work with wood, his visionary approach, and for designing over 500 chairs and armchairs.
Thanks to his work, he received numerous prestigious awards, including the Lunning Prize, the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale, and the Eckersberg Medal. His creations are part of the permanent collections at MoMA in New York and the Neue Sammlung in Munich.
