Vico Magistretti’s foldable masterpiece
In 1977, Vico Magistretti imagined Nuvola Rossa and revolutionised the bookcase. He folded a single wooden board like giant origami. The result: two inverted V-shaped side panels support six shelves without any vertical uprights. The structure stands alone, defies gravity and displays incredible lightness. Nearly 50 years later, it remains as modern as on the first day.
Oiled solid walnut, living grain
Cassina selects 22 mm thick American solid walnut. Artisans hand-sand each piece, then apply oil to bring out the deep, warm veins. The wood breathes, develops a patina over time and gains character. The finish remains matte and velvety to the touch.
Bluffing stability, generous capacity
The shelf measures 100 cm wide, 192 cm high and only 35 cm deep. Yet it effortlessly supports heavy books, sculptures or bottles. Thanks to its open design, it naturally divides a living room without enclosing it. Place it behind a sofa, against a wall or in the centre of the room: it works everywhere.
Timeless elegance in any decor
Walnut instantly harmonises with white, matte black, brass or waxed concrete. It warms a minimalist interior and brings nobility to a more furnished space. From the front, it imposes a graphic presence; from the side, it almost disappears. Nuvola Rossa transcends trends without ageing.
A handcrafted icon
Cassina produces each example in its Italian workshops, numbers and signs it. Compasso d’Oro 1979 winner, it features in the world’s greatest museums and continues to furnish the finest interiors. You are buying a piece of design history that lasts a lifetime.
