A sculptural cloud that structures space
The Nuage bookcase by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina, reissued in 2012, remains one of Charlotte Perriand’s most poetic creations. Originally designed in 1958 for the Maison du Mexique and Maison de la Tunisie, it plays with asymmetry and lightness. Its compartments in matte black anodised aluminium and natural oak shelves seem to float in the air. This high-end piece becomes a true functional sculpture.
Matte black aluminium and oiled natural oak
The structure is based on extremely slender matte black anodised aluminium profiles. The shelves and backs are in solid oiled oak – warm and robust. Some compartments feature coloured lacquered panels – Klein blue, white, grey – punctuating the whole like bursts of light. Sliding doors in aluminium or frosted glass offer discretion and elegance.
Open and closed storage, fully customisable
With its 215 cm length, 177 cm height and 48 cm depth, it separates spaces without enclosing them. Use it as a bookcase, bar, display cabinet or room divider. Each compartment can remain open, be fitted with a sliding door or include a drawer. It adapts to all uses: books, decorative objects, hi-fi or precious glassware.
Airy presence in contemporary interiors
In a bright living room or open space, it gently structures the volume. The oak/black aluminium contrast dialogues with waxed concrete, cream white or anthracite grey. Viewed from the front or side, it constantly changes expression. The Nuage bookcase by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina brings a touch of organic modernism without ever weighing down the space.
Charlotte Perriand’s free spirit at Cassina
Charlotte Perriand imagined furniture that liberates both space and the mind. Nuage embodies this philosophy: modularity, lightness and natural beauty. Cassina, in collaboration with Pernette Perriand-Barsac, has faithfully reproduced it since 2012. An icon of 20th-century design that continues to inspire today’s interiors.
