Absolute free form
Charlotte Perriand designed the Montparnasse table for Cassina in 1959 for the apartments of Japanese students at the Maison du Japon (Cité Universitaire, Paris). She rejected rigid geometry and created an organic, soft and generous top that invites people to sit around it without hierarchy. Over 65 years later, this table remains one of the most beautiful declarations of love to conviviality.
Deep black-stained ash and matte finish
Cassina crafts the top from open-pore solid ash intensely stained deep black, then applies a velvety matte finish that lets the wood breathe. The rounded and slightly raised edges evoke pebbles polished by the sea. Six cylindrical legs in the same deep black solid ash subtly incline outwards for perfect stability and airy elegance.
Natural conviviality and ideal proportions
With dimensions of 220 × 90 × H 73 cm, the Montparnasse table comfortably seats 8 people. Use it as an everyday dining table, large meeting table or even shared desk. Its free form eliminates sharp angles: everyone finds their place naturally, without feeling constrained.
The Montparnasse table by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina: Strong yet discreet presence
The matte black absorbs light and highlights surrounding textures: light leather chairs, waxed concrete or antique parquet. In a contemporary interior, it asserts its sculptural silhouette; in a warmer setting, it blends softly. The Montparnasse table crosses styles without ever making a statement.
A living classic reissued identically
Cassina, in collaboration with Pernette Perriand-Barsac, reproduces each example with the same wood species and stain as in 1959. You are buying a historical piece that continues to fit perfectly into today’s interiors.
