The Milan Furniture Fair remains the ultimate global benchmark for designer furniture. Every year in late April, hundreds of thousands of visitors travel to the Lombard capital to discover current trends, the strategic visions of manufacturers, and the latest inventions from the greatest designers of our time.

For Bel Œil, it is, above all, an opportunity to come together and seek inspiration… found in the subtle details, in the intentions of the brands on their stands and in their showrooms, but also on every street corner, as the creative energy flows with such intensity during this magical week.

There is much diplomacy, negotiation, and marketing strategy involved with our manufacturing partners… But it is also the moment for us to shape our choices for the months ahead and define the aesthetic direction that aligns with our desires and our understanding of our local markets.

Former artistic director, Perrine de la Bretesche has been devoted to photography since 2019… exploring the tensions between reality and abstraction. Her work questions our relationship with the environment. The artist lives and works in Nice.

THE CALL OF THE SEA:

This mysterious, intangible and immeasurable entity fascinates Perrine de la Bretesche.
The sea, this infinite landscape, scrutinised by fishermen and walkers alike, creates, under the effects of light and wind, a spectacle of endlessly renewed variations. The photographer’s images seem to translate the moods of this Mediterranean landscape that presents itself to her almost daily.

Her horizons – Ether (2025), Sillage (2024), Filigrane (2022) – capture both the ripples of water under wind and currents and the chromatic shifts of sea and sky. The artist loves to play with light effects, catching the moment when the sea becomes a mirror at the horizon or, on the contrary, the day when the azure turns milky white. If some images lean toward abstraction, it is to better evoke the famous oceanic feeling, that sensation of unity with the elements.
Perrine de la Bretesche’s horizons invite contemplation and introspection. They encourage us to slow down in a contemporary world that imposes an ever-faster pace.

The call of the sea leads her to vary the focal length. To get as close as possible to her subject, the artist alternates wide shots (horizons) with tight close-ups (“The Skin of the Sea”). In these, she captures the sparkle of sunlight on the water or the texture of the sea itself. Through this back-and-forth between near and far, she has succeeded in seizing what only the naked eye can perceive: the magic of the sea’s instability.

Eero Saarinen’s iconic designer furniture is far more than an exercise in elegant form. It represents a radical response to a visual problem that no other designer had dared to confront.

To Saarinen, the space beneath tables and chairs had become unbearably chaotic. The Finnish-American designer described it as a form of structural disorder: a confusing accumulation of legs that fragmented interiors without harmony or grace. As he explained to the Museum of Modern Art in New York:

“The underside of typical tables and chairs makes a confusing, unrestful world. I wanted to clear up the slum of legs.”

This obsession led to five years of intensive research. According to Knoll International, the Pedestal Collection was born directly from this ambition: to radically simplify the space beneath the tabletop until only one central base remained, shaped as a single, fluid form.

The Tulip base is not merely an aesthetic choice. It marks a decisive shift from mechanical industrial design towards organic design inspired by natural forms. Introduced in 1956 in collaboration with Knoll, the collection broke with the conventions of its time and redefined contemporary furniture design far beyond the decade in which it was created.

Alongside the 3rd United Nations International Ocean Conference, and as part of the Year of the Sea, Bel Œil is hosting, just steps from the port of Nice, the exhibition “Facing the Sea.”

Four artists, passionate and/or simply amateurs or lovers of the sea, offer us their perspective on this space cherished by the general public but still very little known to scientists.

Eric Bourret places us on the shore facing it, in a face-to-face with the horizon – that space opening onto all possibilities.

Nicolas Floc’h reveals the variety of marine habitats in the Mediterranean and familiarizes us with the color of the water.

Steven Pennaneac’h, also a regular of the shore which he visits almost daily, brings back from his solitary walks photographs – starting points for his paintings, memories of the marine landscapes crossed.

Ariane Michel, after filming the sleep of walruses in the Arctic, the nocturnal life of birds in Switzerland, turned her attention to the aftermath of a hurricane in North America. From this natural disaster linked to climate warming remain images that she edited especially for the exhibition and a few objects gathered along the way.

Let’s revisit a story never told until now: the story of Bel Œil and the Hôtel du Couvent in Nice…

A magnificent hotel project, which we’ve been following since its inception alongside our friends and clients—the architects—and for which Bel Œil eventually stepped out of its comfort zone… by developing truly exceptional furniture pieces.

Just a few elements, but we’re proud to have brought the Carimate chair by Vico Magistretti out of the archives, and to have convinced Fritz Hansen to reissue it, in agreement with the heirs of the Milanese Master…

We also had the pleasure of developing a contemporary rug model—based on an old Chinese rug unearthed for the project’s sponsor—produced by the French editor Toulemonde Bochart…

It was the result of long months of dialogue and exchange with the architects from Festen and the client, Valéry Grégo, to finally contribute—on our modest scale—to this remarkable project: Le Couvent.
